Signs and Symptoms of Dark Circles
- Puffy eyes: Dark circles usually appear with puffy eyes. This occurs when the fluid accumulates under your eyes, hence causing it to swell. Puffiness is triggered by lack of sleep, allergies, and even when you’re dehydrated. This symptom makes the dark circles more noticeable.
- Sunken eyes: If you see that your eyes are sunken, it is mostly because of dehydration which causes the skin under the eyes to lose its collagen and fat. This is another sign that you need an under eye treatment to prevent the shadows that make your eyes look deeper.

Causes of Dark Circles
Genetics
Dark circles can often run in your genetics. This happens when you inherit the thin, delicate under-eye or hyperpigmentation genes. People who have light or pale skin will show more blood vessels which makes the under-eye area look darker. Sometimes, these inherited conditions can cause frequent darkness under the eyes.
Aging
As people age, their skin loses collagen and elastin factors. This makes their skin thinner and causes it to sag. This is why older people have more visible blood vessels under the eyes which causes dark circles. The fat and muscle tissue under the eyes also reduce and create hollows that give a shadow effect.
Lack of Sleep
If you are sleep-deprived, it can cause your skin to become pale and dull. This allows the blood vessels and dark tissue under the skin of your eyes to become more visible. Poor sleep can also lead to fluid retention, which can cause puffiness and eye bags.
Allergies
Having allergies can cause your blood vessels to dilate and become more visible, leading to dark circles. Along with allergy, if you are itching, rubbing, or scratching the eyes, it can irritate the sensitive skin around the eyes. This leads to swelling and puffiness under your eyes.
